The Australian Shepherd, often known simply as the "Aussie", is a medium-sized breed of dog. While their name is a bit deceiving Australian Shepherds actually were started in America and identified as a breed in the early 20th century. An active yet easy-going dog, the Australian shepherd loves to play with children and tends to get along well with other pets. Australian shepherds are great family pets, police dogs, and competitors in obedience trials. Aussies are an intelligent working dog with strong herding and guarding instincts. He is a loyal companion and has the stamina to work all day. He is well balanced, slightly longer than tall, of medium size and bone, with coloring that offers variety and individuality.
